SubGear XP10 Mac OS X Compatible?

(Update: As of July 2013, I no longer use or recommend the SubGear XP10 dive computer. I’ve had reliability issues as well as frustrations with claims made by a company representative made about coming support for Mac, which is yet to materialize.)

I’d like to share something that I hope the fine folks at SubGear will see. Even though I just launched this scuba blog, it already sees thousands of visitors every month. (In real life, I am a web engineer and marketer.) That being the case, one of the things that I measure is which web browsers are used most commonly.

Heres the message for SubGear. On an average month, roughly 27% of visitors to this site are using either Safari, or a Macintosh version of Firefox, Mozilla or Chrome. الكزينو From that, we can tell that 25%-30% of my visitors are using a Mac. سباق الأحصنة bet365 fogadóiroda Yet, the software that comes with most dive computers only works with a PC. العاب كسب المال

The SubGear XP10 is usable with a Mac. بيتواي بيتواي I use it with one all the time. I cannot and do not, however, use the software that came with the computer. كازينو اون لاين tippmix élő foci Also, it was a bit of a technical challenge to get everything up and running, so I don’t think most users would do so. f1 sportfogadás

The point is, the data show that lots of divers use Macintosh computers, and dive computer manufactures would do well to ensure platform independence with their diving products.

  1. I know it’s been a while since you posted regarding the XP 10, but thought I might give an update, since yours is the first site I read when I had this issue. I just figured out how to do this on my MacBook running El Capitan. I downloaded ScubaPro’s LogTrak software. When I tried to open it, a pop-up said I needed to download a legacy version of Java, but there was a button to the Apple site to do this. Once loaded, LogTrak read my XP 10 as an Aladin computer and all the information came through cleanly. Now I need to figure out how to import my old dives.

    1. Thanks Robert,

I haven’t updated it in quite some time. I was having reliability problems with both the XP10 and the Aladin 2G and have been diving with Shearwater Petrels for the last few years.

But, a lot of people are still having problems getting dive data out of the XP10 pr Aladin and into their MacBooks.

I think the solution that worked for me, may work for you. I used divelogs.de and Subsurface to upload the data and export it back into a format I could use. Drop me a note if I might be able to help.

  2. I am wondering if y’all had any luck getting the XP10 and Mac (OSX 10.6.8) working together?

I dive with the XP10 as a backup to my primary PDC which actually failed while out of the country. I’d love to be able to get the dives off the XP10 and imported into MacDive if at all possible…

    1. Unfortunately, no. Right when I got it, I had a MacBook Pro that was two generations back from what I have now, and I was able to get it to connect. I remember jumping through some technical hoops, but I was able to get data out and import it into MacDive, which I think was free at that time.

Since then, I’ve changed computers twice and haven’t been able to connect to my macs since. I use Gap for planning decompressions dives and generating tables, which is PC only, so I carry around a netbook that I use for diving, but I’m not too happy with that solution.

I did speak with the rep about it. He told me that there would be a Mac version of their own software coming out this year. That was about 5 months ago. I’m not holding my breath.

As for MacDive, I inquired about the XP10 specifically (as well as VR dive computers). Judging by their short response, I got the feeling they were irritated that I even asked, so I likely won’t be using or recommending MacDive in the future.

I’ll be watching closely for any new options for Mac users and the XP10, so check back from time to time and I’ll keep you posted. Please drop me a note if you learn anything.

  3. Hey Joe,

I’m sorry you’re bummed. I know I’m not the only one who has had the XP10 working with a mac, but I sure haven’t been able to with my newest MacBook Pro.

As I mentioned, my decompression software is GAP that I run on a netbook loaded with XP. I don’t like the PC at all but it’s the only computer I use for diving at the moment.

I truly love the SubGear XP10. I have been going back and forth between that and a Vytek lately. The Vytek handles gas switches and has a gauge mode which are essential for technical diving, but I can’t stand the user interface and feel that it has some very serious flaws.

I can’t use the the XP10 for that kind of diving, but I think it is a million times easier to use. I’m going to contact SubGear directly and see what they have to say about it. Probably not much but it’s worth a try. I’ll post whatever I learn here, and try to send you a private email too.

  4. Ok.

Pulling my hair out over here.

Guys @ Scubapro sent me the BAFO BF-7030 USB irda . . . when installed it opens a little stripped “greybar” as if it is scanning and then fails.

I think the drivers for Snow Leopard don’t exist maybe?

  5. Hey JoeD,

After several conversations down at the shop, no one knows a thing. So, I decided once and for all to get my new MacBook Pro working like the last one. Hmmm… Sound simple enough, but no dice.

I’ve been pulling my hair out trying to figure out how I had it working before. I’m going to keep trying. I’ll let you know when I get it.

  6. Definitely send a pic. It’s probably best if you email it to me at joe@joescuba.com. I work with engineers so let’s see what we can do. I know there are a LOT of Mac users out there that would like a reliable way to connect with their SubGear dive computers.

  7. I use Dive Log . . .

I can send a pic of my network settings page where I get stuck if you like. Also, in my system profiler where the dongle appears talks about PPP?

Thank you for any and all help Joe.

  8. I guess my original post should’ve read, “used to use it all the time,” because it has been a few months now and I completely rebuilt my macbook since then. I don’t remember it ever being too hard though.

  9. Let me play with it and see what I did. I’ve made some computer changes recently so I have to go back and figure it out. If I get stuck, I’ll run it by the shop where I teach. The program I was using knew how to read the data stream so it worked pretty much the same as the PC software the computer came with. I don’t think it was MacDive even though I did have it loaded. Keep checking back here, or I’ll send you a private message when I know what to tell you.

  10. Hi:

I got a CablesUnlimited Irda USB Dongle.

I got it to mount but I’m not sure what to do in the Networking window to get it to connect. Can you help?

    Thanks!

    Joe D

    1. BAFO BF-7030 USB 2.0 to IrDA-Wireless Adapter

I don’t remember where I got it. I don’t really use it much with my macs (it does work though), because my decompression software (GAP) is PC only. So, instead of using my macbook pro for logging dives and my netbook for deco planning, I just use the netbook for everything. I much prefer the mac, but at least the netbook is small and cheap; both good characteristics for taking to dive sites.
