The Best Travel Backplate – Dive Rite Stainless Steel – Lite
Calling the Dive Rite Stainless Steel Lite the “Best Travel Backplate” is a bold statement, but I 100% believe it is true. Here’s why. (Read my article: Choosing a Backplate and Wing)
I’m lucky. I have a lot of diving opportunities all over the world as part of my job. For many years, I have been traveling with an OMS aluminum backplate, which I like just fine. Aluminum is great for being lightweight (1.75 pounds), but not all that corrosion resistant in salt water.
Dive Rite Stainless Steel – Lite Backplate (2.5 pounds)
At only 3/4 of a pound heavier, the Dive Rite Lite Backplate is a hollowed out version of Dive Rite’s standard backplate! At $135, it isn’t even more expensive than an aluminum backplate.
Dive Rite’s Lite backplate is the perfect travel backplate. At 2.5 pounds, it truly is light, and unlike some competing plates, it is constructed of 316 stainless steel as opposed to 304 stainless. 316 stainless steel is considered “marine grade” whereby 304 stainless is not.
I have owned 304 stainless steel backplates. They corrode eventually. While they don’t turn chalky like aluminum, 304 stainless rusts. I think of it as a “delayed rusting” metal.
316 stainless steel costs more, which is why some backplate makers cheap out. Trust me, this is the backplate to buy if you are a traveling diver. It looks cool too.
Dive Rite Lite Backplate Additional Details
Built for minimalist divers and frequent travelers, the Dive Rite Lite Backplate delivers the same high-quality performance as the standard plate—just in a lighter package. At only 2.5 pounds, it’s the go-to choice for those looking to shave weight without sacrificing durability or functionality.
Crafted from laser-cut stainless steel, the Lite Backplate is CNC deburred and electropolished for a clean, corrosion-resistant finish that won’t catch on gear or exposure suits. Rounded edges ensure comfort during long dives while eliminating pressure points—especially important when you’re wearing thinner exposure protection or diving light.
This backplate comes ready for action with built-in bungee holes for sidemount stage bottles and cam band slots for single-tank setups, eliminating the need for additional adapters or modifications. Whether you’re exploring tropical reefs or heading out on a dive trip where every ounce matters, this backplate keeps your rig streamlined and efficient.
Ideal for travel diving, warm water dives, or anywhere weight savings is key, the Dive Rite Lite Backplate offers smart design in a sleek, travel-friendly format.
